2018 Workshops
Workshops Tuesday Afternoon:
Living Well, Leading Well with Rev. Dr. Scott Stoner
Parker Palmer described in his book A Hidden Wholeness the concept of living an “undivided life.” This workshop is based on that idea and the belief that in order for lay and clergy leaders to lead well they must also live well, practicing self-care and balance in their own lives and creating a culture of wellness in their places of ministry. This workshop will explore the concept of the undivided life—always a work in progress, and present some key ideas to help us toward that goal.
The Rev. Dr. Scott Stoner has thirty-five years experience as an Episcopal priest, retreat leader, spiritual director and licensed marriage and family therapist. He is the co-creator of the Living Compass Faith and Wellness Ministry, a comprehensive, parish-based wellness ministry that reintroduces our modern culture to an ancient, faith-based approach to wellness. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Bexley-Seabury Theological Seminary in Chicago and is the author of Your Living Compass: Living Well in Though, Word, and Deed (Church Publishing).
Deep Dive into Teen Resources with Holly Stoner
In this workshop we will discuss the challenges facing today’s teens, and what we can do to empower them to live happy, healthy lives. Holly will share materials created by the Samaritan Family Wellness Foundation, resources meant to help adults who work with teens in their efforts to empower them to create healthy and happy lives.
Over the last forty years Holly Hughes Stoner, M. Ed., LMFT, has taught grade school, middle school, and as a special education teacher. Additionally, she has had a K-12 tutoring practice for over thirty years and is currently in practice as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Holly has also co-authored The Teen Compass Wellness Notebook, The Parent Wellness Compass and other wellness materials with her husband, Scott and together they also co-direct the Samaritan Family Wellness Foundation.
Laying on of Hands with Prayer led by Alice Pickton & Pastor Charie Reid
This workshop will introduce participants to a process of laying on of hands and prayer, which offers an individual an experience of deep relaxation, moments of rest and peace and being held in God’s grace. Some may be able to experience the process and/or assist in offering it. Alice Pickton, Reiki Master, and Pastor Charie Reid led a healing ministry at Grace Presbyterian Church, Walnut Creek, for several years.
Workshops Wednesday Afternoon:
Spirituality and the Twelve Steps: An Introduction to Richard Rohr’s Breathing Under Water with Rev. Anne Dryden McKeever
“We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addictions, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and to our world. In Breathing Under Water, Richard Rohr, Franciscan priest and founder/director of the Center for Action and Contemplation in New Mexico, shows us how the gospel principles in the Twelve Steps can free anyone from any addiction—from an obvious dependence on alcohol or drugs to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin.” In this workshop we will navigate Rohr’s Three Openings: Our opinionated Head, our closed-down Heart, and our defensive and defended Body.
The Reverend Anne Dryden McKeever is enjoying her ninth year as an Episcopal priest after retiring from teaching high school English for over three decades. She serves as an associate at St. Paul’s Church in Sacramento and as the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California’s representative to the Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church. She is joyfully sober.
Family Ministry 101 with Rev. Matthew Woodward
Come and participate in a conversation about Family Ministry with the Rev. Matthew Woodward. With the Joyful Noise Eucharist, and Godly Play wondering at the heart of family ministry in his parish Matthew brings a wealth of experience and skill in this area. Trained as a Theological Educator, with a focus on early childhood, Matthew will talk about authenticity in ministry with Children, and the importance of story and wonder. Matthew also deeply believes that imitation rather than explanation is the foundation of children’s spirituality and will encourage authentic leaders to find their own style so that children may learn by watching, as they always do.
The Rev. Matthew Woodward has been the Rector of Transfiguration Episcopal Church for 7 years. Transfiguration has a history if innovative family ministry, and Matthew has worked to deepen this tradition and extend it. Family ministry at Transfiguration seeks to be intergenerational, embedded throughout the liturgy of the church and open to wonder. The spirituality of children is valued and their participation is all elements of parish life encouraged.
